also it just happened hours ago, a deadly shooting in oakland, why this kills is considered especially tragic. mornings on 2 starts now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. good morning, welcome to friday, it's november 23rd. i'm dave clark. >> and i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell today. happening right now we want to take you to shops centers, with people trying to get their hands on black friday deals. and he's been with shoppers since 4:30 this morning and alex is it still crazy out there. >> reporter: it's calmed down a little bit. it was those early bird black friday shoppers who want to come down early and get the deep discounts but you can see right now the streets here, market street obviously filling up fast, a lot of people coming down here, their hands full of

shopping bags already, they scooped up a lot of those early bird deals out here. let me show you what we saw early this morning, a chaotic scene out here, take a look. hundreds of people crowded the entrance to the aber crombie and pitch store. people had been lining up trying to take advantage of a big sale. and the store was packed after that. many shoppers say they're finding deep discounts for a lot of the stores in san francisco and one man drove down here early this morning from napa. >> definitely worth the trip, definitely. hour drive, not a big deal. 4:00 a.m., get up, get it done, go home and relax. >> reporter: kind of fun, too right. >> yeah, it's an experience. >> reporter: many of the stores here in san francisco opened up

at midnight including macy's and old navy. and means the shoppers have been hunting for those deals all throughout the night. many people told me they just didn't sleep. if you're planning to do shopping, there's a lot of people up early this black friday. if you're planning to do shopping here, not a bad time to come and do it. live this morning, in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. there's the brand new outlets in livermore that have been very busy. full bags coming out of that out let mall. hundreds of people waited in line overnight to get in there. it is the bay area's newest shopping mall and it is enjoying a lot of success. look at starbucks, also very important when you're shopping. the outlets opened at midnight and they are going to stay open until late tonight. your time 7:04.

bargain hunters got an early start to black friday shopping as well in east bay. they weren't playing around. this is a scene at the target store in dublin, shoppers rushed the doors when target opened up at 9:00 last night. the store opened three hours earlier than they did last year. and for the first time, sears rolled out its black friday deals at 8:00 p.m. thanksgiving night. in oakland people were lining up as early as 4:30 yesterday afternoon. they wanted to go after 50-inch tvs for 300 bucks. take a look at these lines, the great mall in milpedas stretched for miles. it opened up at midnight and they are going to stay open

until 10:00 tonight. in other news this morning, forensic investigators spent the night scouring the parking lot outside a san rafael parking lot where a festive night erupted at gunfire. elaine. >> reporter: the two men are facing weapons charges and actually there were several weapons found on scene out here. now that it's daylight you can see one of the weapons, a shotgun, and you can see the weapons magazine. the violence started with a fight inside club 101 and several shots were fired outside the club just before 1:00 a.m. two men were shot. those men were transported to the hospital and one man is in serious condition and the other is set to be released. right now police are trying to determine if and how two other men were involved. >> we basically were able to lock down the entire parking lot. fortunate enough there was only a few areas of egress out of the parking lot so we were able to lock it down quickly and identify most of the people. we don't believe very many people would have gotten out after the shooting. >> reporter: club 101 described

itself as the hottest nightclub. they told us there was another shooting back here in 2008. that shooting was fatal. he said that was the last time the club had any serious problems. back out here live, you can see several shattered car windows. there's bullet holes in some of the businesses out here and there's so much evidence to collect and that's why it could take several hours before police reopen the parking lot. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland has reached a grim milestone, the 111th homicide of the year is now in the books. that's more than all of last year. this latest shooting happened just before 2:00 a.m. on willow street in west oakland. no one is in custody. and a memorial service will be held for a campbell man shot to death during an attempted carjacking. rory park petford was killed

see traffic moving nicely into san francisco. at highway 24 through lafayette, as you make your way through the tunnel looking good. >> tara, thank you and a very good morning. sunrise over the city, a few high clouds and a little bit of patchy fog. it tends to pop up around 6 and 8 and burn off around 9. it can be great visibility and lousy visibility. cold readings inland, it's going to be another nice day. a few high clouds, mostly sunny, mild to warm, running a little bit above average on the afternoon highs. the weekend not much change. fog might be increasing, though as we get easterly breeze from the delta, and next rain would be looks like maybe late next wednesday, more likely thursday and maybe all the way into saturday or sunday, could be wet. forecast models are definitely

on board. but that's not until next week. a lot of high clouds in the north, generally speaking it's the fog. get rid of both of these, it will be sunny side up. it's the inland fog, not the coastal fog and that's what we're dealing with because of the recent rain. no here for a while as we just talked about. plenty of cloud cover, that's portland and seattle. for us the higher clouds moving through the northern part of the state, through lake county and a few here. 30s and 40s. fairfield, san rafael, napa have seen palo alto at 39 degrees. san jose 41, not far away. 39. there are a few there. after we start ramping up and warming up, temperatures will be close to the mid- to upper 60s. mostly sunny, high clouds to the north, overall that patchy fog is in place, a couple hours of that and you can see visibility for about zero for a few in spots.

wounded two dozen more this morning. a group of palestinian protesters came too close to a border fence. hamas has tried to pull crowds away signaling the deaths will not jeopardize the cease fire. and israeli police arrested suspects in a tel-aviv bond blast that injured two dozen people. it included an arab with israeli citizen ship. they're accuse of carrying out that bus bombing on wednesday just hours before the cease fire was declared. police say the bomb was set off by a cell phone. a boxer noted for his nickname is on the verge of dying. the family of former world champion hector macho camo chough is split on whether to -- camacho is split on whether to remove him from life support. some of the family members want to wait two more days and his father wants him off life

support and his organs donated. nicholas is being questioned this morning about allegations involving alleged illegal campaign funding. the former president o of france was named a key witness when a judge asked him whether or not he took illegal campaign donations and took advantage of an 90-year-old heiress. and was told it would be passed on to the treasurer. a long-term budget plan for the region may take a while before there is an agreement. budget talks maven through the weekend because all 27 nations have the power to veto it. there does appear to be some sign of progress. cyprus is closer to reaching a multimillion dollar bail out.

in overnight news, a mag tuesday 2.1 earthquake rattled new jersey last night. many people who live in south jersey took to social media to report feeling the rumble. the earthquake rattled new jersey as well just three weeks ago. space enthusiasts are anxiously awaiting a nasa announcement in san francisco next month.  nasa scientists say a rover sent to the planets mars has made an important discovery. curiosity has been taking samples of the mars air for months. they are staying low about the discovery, but everybody -- observers say they were to find organic findings. scientists are going to reveal their discovery at a science conference in san francisco in two weeks. time is 7:17, mexico's

president wants to change the country's name. felipe wants to change it to just mexico. while the full name is rarely used he says they do not need to imitate the united states. they gained the name in 1884 after winning independence from spain. there is a controversy about a nativity scene and the courts are getting done. the district court judge has sided with the city to remove a nativity scene that's been at a park for years. a are group of atheists flooded the city with applications to put up their own displalays. >> if you keep caving to this hate speech and i'm going to call it that for the first time, you know, hate speech includes the hatred of the christian message and there is a war on christmas.

>> while the city of santa monica says the displays are creating too much paperwork and they call it a hazard to the park. plans are underway for what's being called nothing but a party from people going to southern california and las vegas. the company is closer to putting a party train on the tracks after a conditional agreement with union pacific railroad last week. it would feature a lounge, tvs and a private car for bachelor parties. a ticket would be $99 each way and would include food and drinks more changes could be coming to downtown walnut creek. it is called the locust street specific plan and it focuses on underdeveloped land in that area. goals include adding a hotel, retail, office and residential space as well as more parking and public walking paths. your time is 7:19,

secretary of defense, leon panetta is coming back to the central coast this weekend. he's the guest speaker tomorrow at the 300 anniversary of the caramel mission. it is the oldest residential dwelling in california. leon panetta owns a home in caramel valley. a small town is trying to build a tsunami resistant port. a 2011 magnitude nine earthquake in japan sank a boat in crescent city. 47 others were damaged and 2/3 of the harbor docks were destroyed. a stretch of the san francisco's o ocean beach is closed because of a sewage spill and could stay closed through the weekend. barricades are set up at the intersection near the great highway. heavy rain tuesday night overwhelmed a portion of the

sewer main which caused an overflow onto beach. some people are ignoring the warning signs. >> mother nature has a way overcleaning itself up good. >> the public utilities commission wants three consecutive days of good water quality test results before the beach is officially reopened to the public. almost 50 female inmates in a pennsylvania prison have become sick from carbon monoxide poisoning. officials say it may have come from the heating ask air- conditioning system. the prison board is investigating. meantime an investigation is under way into the death of a 47-year-old inmate at the santa cruz county jail. he is the third inmate to die at the jail in the past few months. the cause of death isn't determined but the man was

101 northbound at the san antonio avenue and embarcadero road exit. be aware of that. six hours is a long time. and the bay bridge toll plaza, you see traffic flowing into san francisco. and coming in for berkeley looking good as you make your way toward the mcarthur maze here's steve. low 50s, for others it's cold, upper 30s. gilroy 39, upper 30s around concord and livermore but a beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge, a few high clouds drifting down from the north, patchy fog as well. north and east bay. some of the visibility can be awful. once it burns off, it will be a hazy day. it's a dry forecast probably until next wednesday night, then looks like rain coming in next week. not today. some of the higher clouds,

time now 7:30. we're starting with breaking news on the peninsula. ktvu's tara moriarty is in our traffic center. we have a big problem, so where is it and what happened. we have an overturned patrol car on 101 in palo alto and three lanes of traffic will be shut down for up to six hours. we have just received that word that one person has been killed in this collision and the patrol officer has been taken to the hospital. now, this is on 101 northbound at the ekg -- embarcadero road

exit. the officer has been brought to the the hospital. the number one lane is open, but two, three, and four closed. this will be closed up to six hours. we are encouraging folks to take 280 instead. let's head back to the desk. we'll check back with you more on that. meantime, a san jose fire captain was rushed to the hospital after being badly hurt in a accident last night. live with information on that, and to tell us how many people were left homeless by this. >> reporter: i just spoke so one of the neighbors and one of the people had just moved in a couple days ago. it's near lee and fruitdale. you can see the damage. there's not a roof on there anymore. the fire started about 8:20 last night on willow leaf drive. some relates heard explosion

and came outside to see flames shooting from the roof. it quickly escalated to three alarms. and firefighters attacked from the inside but had to move outside when the roof partially collapsed on a fire dap taken. that fire -- captain. the fire captain is a 16 year veteran and is supposed to be having more tests run this morning at the hospital. >> he looked pretty palpal. we're all kind of breathing a sigh of relief when we have, you know, when we can at least go visit him and he's still alive and everything. looks like it should recover. >> four town home units were destroyed by the water and flames. 18 people including families with children and pets were displaced but the red cross came in to help them last night. firefighters say that somebody told them they had started a

fire in the fireplace but at this point it's unknown if that's the cause. we're being told by a fire captain that they are calling this accidental. no power or water shortages expected after a major power plant fire in orrville in butte county. we're told it's mostly affecting the four underground floors at that plant. firefighters tried several times to put the flames out but it was too dangerous so they're letting it burn itself out. your time, 7:33 and a week long wait finally ended for people who camped out at best buy's across the bay area. that was the scene in emeryville when the doors opened at that best buy at midnight. many people who lined up said they were trying to get their

hands on a 40-inch television for 180 bucks and a laptop for 200 dollars. >> when you get in there, you get in and out. >> the electronic giants offered discounts on phones, ipadsings video games and dvds. retailer experts say there could be a smaller turn out as many people may be shopping the online black friday deals. and they predict online sales will go up 18% as more brick and mortar stores are putting their deals online. workers at bay area wal- mart stores say they will walk off the job during the big holiday rush. this is a video from maryland where wal-mart workers off the job as shoppers were ready to go inside the store. right now they're holding a march there. southeasterly of -- southeasterly of -- several of the protests are planned at wal-

marts in the bay area. some shoppers say they'll support the workers, others say they'll go in and shop. >> if they walk out, i'm not going to shop until they settle. you can bet that. >> picketers are planning to protest outside the sam's club stores in antioch and pleasanton pleasanton. tensions ran high on black friday shoppers in indianapolis. an angry outburst, one that prompted the police to respond at a k mart tore. we won't have the final numbers until next week but roads have it turned dangerous at the start of the holiday season. two men died when they crashed into another vehicle wednesday night in clear lake oaks. three people were injured. the driver did suffer critical injuries and the girl was air lifted to uc davis medical center but has been released. the former school board

president in maraga is talking publicly about resigning 24 hours after being reelected. dexter was elemented on september 7th and he said his decision was a painful and personal one. he did bow out of a closed door meeting to discuss a lawsuit filed by a former student, cristin is suing the district for alleging failing to stop years of sexual abuse by two teachers in the 1990s and two of his relatives spoke out on behalf of one of canane's abusers. new information, with a story we've been telling you about on e fremont. pg&e has been trying to get a downed power line near mission san jose high school. pg&e just told us moments ago

there are now only five customers without power. at one point, 228 customers were in the dark without power. however, pg&e is hoping to have the power on for everybody by 9:30 this morning. now, they're telling us the wait could be as long as 5 this evening. we'll keep an eye on what pg&e is doing out there. local fans of controversial commode yan cat williams say they've become the punch line of his jokes. >> that's the comedian cat williams booing the audience. this is at the oracle arena last saturday night. some of the people there joined a class action lawsuit. they're accusing him of bizarre behavior, including confronting a lechler, trying to fight and

leaving the stage after 10 minutes of the show. the lawsuit says audience members deserve to get the money back and they have named cat williams and the promoter live nation in the lawsuit. there's been no comment from either of the defendants. ktvu's annual one warm coat drive begins this morning and you can drop off a new or gently used coat at four locations, san francisco's ferry building, bay street in emeryville and san jose's santana row. familiar faces will be on hand at each site and we'll have more on that campaign coming up at 8:45. let's go back to tara moriarty. a major sig alert on the peninsula. what's the latest. most lanes of 101 northbound will be shut down for six hours as they conduct their investigation. let's look at chopper 2. this involved a chp patrol car near

the embarcadero off ramp. and you can see all the fire trucks just to the left of that is the car that flipped over. it's an suv and apparently one in that vehicle did die as a result of this collision. another person was taken to the hospital. you can is sort of see the car right there, chopper can zoom in on that car for me. you can see that this car is facing the wrong direction as you get off the off ramp, so we don't know exactly how this accident happened. we do know that the chp officer was injured. as far as why the chp officer is so far away from the actual car, we don't know exactly how this all unfolded but we can tell you that it is impacting traffic. three lanes are shut down right now. one lane only is open at this hour, and you can see it's causing quite a back up. chp, caltrans are advising ruth.

>> and i'm dave clark. it's friday november 23rd. we're going to take you back to the breaking news we've been following for 30 minutes. at least one person has been killed in a major crash involving a chp vehicle on highway 101 in palo alto. this is causing major traffic problems as well. ktvu's tara moriarty is in our traffic center. what do you know now. traffic nightmare on 101 through palo alto right now. let's get straight to chopper 2 where you can see the scene here. this is people inside of a colored suv, we're zooming in on it right now. these people were involved in the crash off northbound 101 at the embarcadero road exit. two people from that car suffered critical injuries. another was killed. we also know that the patrol car which we're zooming in on right now, that officer involved somehow they were hurt and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. now, this investigation will take hours. the major accident investigation team has been called out and they're saying

early start to shopping. this was at the target store in dublin. as the doors opened at 9:00 last night. they opened three hours earlier than they did last year. many holiday shoppers are going to be wearing plaid in oakland today. it's part o of an event when asks shoppers to patronize local businesses instead of chain stores. the broadway shuttle is also going to be free. if you have to go to work today, you can get shopping in this weekend because tomorrow has been designated small business saturday. the event is organized by american express and customers who enroll their american express card and spend $25 or more at participating chants are going to get a 25-dollar credit. american express took part in small business saturday last year. time is 8:05, an active crime scene still exists in san rafael where there was an evernight shooting.

two people were shot outside of a nightclub. lorraine blanco outside club 101. investigators are working on exactly what happened. lorraine. >> reporter: yes, they are. it was a chaotic scene in the san rafael parking lot early this morning. police tell us multiple shots were fired by multiple guns. and police are still looking for evidence. witnesses say the violence started with a fight inside club 101. it's located on west san francisco boulevard just off the 101 freeway. the conflict spilled out into the strip mall parking lot where two men were shot just before 1:00 a.m. the victims were transferred to marin general hospital. police have two men in custody. they're facing weapons charges. detectives are trying to determine if and how they were

involved in this shooting. >> it's very difficult, you know, we're going to hope that somebody's going to come across and give us a statement. you know, we'll piece it together hopefully that it will tell a story. it's going to take some time obviously to put it together because there are many so many pieces of evidence. >> reporter: club 101 describes itself as marin's hottest nightclub. it plays last timein, hip hop and tech music. in 2008 one person was shot outside the club and that was the last time they had any problems. dollar tree was supposed to have black friday sales. police tell us the strip mall will be closed for several hours. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning the city o of oakland just reached a grim milestone. the 111th homicide of the year has been recorded. that's one more than all of last year. the latest shooting happened just about 2:00 this morning on

willow street in west oakland. so far, no suspects have been arrested. policepolice officers in richmond investigating a second deadly shooting on the same block this week. the latest incident happened on 5th and barrett on the iron triangle. a man walked up to the victim sitting on a porch and shot the victim. another man was shot and killed just on tuesday. police say it doesn't appear to be a connection between the two cases. a memorial service will be held tomorrow for a campbell man shot to death during an attempted carjacking. rory park pettiford was killed outside a 7-eleven by suspects fleaing a crime scene that included four armed robberies. it would be held at 11:00 a.m. at darlene fisher memorial chapel in campbell. they are offering a reward leading to the arrest of a second suspect.

time is 8:29. we're following breaking news about highway 101 in palo alto. a major crash. at least one person has been killed in a crash that also involves a chp patrol car. you just got there on the scene. what are you hearing, what are you saying. >> reporter: this involved three vehicles. there's only one lane of highway 101 in the northbound direction is open. three lanes are actually closed and this is because of the fatal accident that involved three cars including a chp vehicle. the white truck that you see down there under the overpass. somebody in that white truck was changing a tire and the chp

officer stopped to help and for some unknown reason, a gold lexus traveling in the slow lane came up from behind, hit that chp car and then came all the way onto this off ramp. you can see from quite a distance, and it's facing the wrong way on the freeway. now six people were in that gold suv. two of them were eject asked -- ejected and one of them died. the person who died was a woman. the rest of the people were taken to the hospital. we know that two of them are suffering from critical injuries. the chp officer was also taken to the hospital. we're told that that chp officer has minor injuries. they're still waiting for an investigation team to come out here on the scene because it is quite a mess. there's a lot of debris here on the freeway. there's a lot of cars stopping and we know that traffic is just backed up for miles and miles. we're told that this could take four to five hours before the freeway can even open back up

had lit a fire in the fireplace that may well have caused the roof to catch fire. no power, no water shortage is expected after a major power plant fire in oroville in butte county. this happened at the plant yesterday morning. mostly it affected the 4 underground floors of the plant. firefighters tried several times it put those flames out but because it was so dangerous, they decided to let it burn itself out. final traffic numbers aren't going to be released until next week but we are seeing a deadly start to the long holiday weekend. two lake county men died when they crashed into another vehicle wednesday night in the town of clear lake oaks. three people including a 12- year-old santa rosa girl were hurt. the driver suffered critical injuries but the girl was air lifted to uc davis medical center and has been discharged. power will not be restored to a e fremont neighborhood until 6:00 tonight. a utility crew has been working

and china to engines of global growth. and watching shopping today, hoping it shows momentum in the economic recovery. our time is 8:43 let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories. we've been talking about this for a couple of hours now. three lanes are shut down on highway 101 in palo alto. there's been a they fall collision involving a chp -- there has been a fatal collision involving a chp officer. traffic is backed up for miles. authorities say one person was killed. two others in critical condition. a chp officer has minor injuries. look at the traffic, a sig alert has been issued. these lanes may not be open until 1:00 this afternoon. be aware. we'll bring you more details on the injuries and the investigate as we get them. meantime two people were detained by san rafael police. two others were wounded in an overnight shooting that

happened outside of a san rafael nightclub. one victim is in serious condition and is in surgery. investigators think the shooting happened with a fight inside the nightclub. almost 20 people are needing a new place to live after an apartment fire overnight in san jose. a fire captain that was battling the flames was seriously hurt. the injuries include a concussion and neck injuries. investigators still want to know the cause of the fire. all over the bay area this morning the black friday shopping frenzy is underway. some bay area stores opened as early as 8:00 last night. they're going to stay open until very late tonight. well, the black friday rush got off to an ugly start in indianapolis. you can see the security people had to move in after a woman

went on a rant inside that kmart store last night. they were passing out $200 vouchers for plasma tvs. but witnesses say the woman got angry when some of the shoppers started selling their vouchers to people who did not wait in line. >> everybody started going crazy about it and cops got called in and it became a mad house. >> the police did show up and escort that woman out of the store but we're told she was not arrested. >> in sacramento, though, there were pretty tense moments among shoppers there. >> i will stab one of you. >> that's one of the incidents. cameras were rolling. that shopper there threatened to injure someone badly when people started shoving trying to get into that store. a lot of people say there should have been more security on site there and said they really did not feel safe. >> police outside say a drunk driver ran over two holiday

shoppers last night at warm mart. one of the victims was pinned under the suv. her injuries were so severe she had to be air lifted to a local trauma center. the 71-year-old driver that was arrested there on charges of vehicular assault. officers say they did smell alcohol on his breath. time now 8:46, a holiday offer going around that you need to stay away from. the better business bureau warning about text messages claiming to offer you thousand dollar gift cards for target and other major stores. they tell you to go to a web site to claim it and you're asked for your address, birthday and other personal information. >> that's where so many people get their personal information compromised. >> or stolen. >> target says it only sends out coupons to customer phones. by the way, if you get any of those suspicious text messages, the advice, delete it right away. >> well, a lot of businesses are seeing more and more shoppers because of the holidays and it makes it a

time now, 8:54 we're following breaking news in palo alto, where one person has been killed in a crash on highway o 101 and 101 and it involves a chp vehicle. and janine de la vega is live with more on what may have caused this crash. >> reporter: it looks like the freeway is going to be closed here for quite some time.

it is just still a mess out here. only one lane of traffic open in the northbound lanes of 101. near the embarcadero exit. three cars are involved in this accident, a white truck over there is one of the vehicles involved as well as that chp vehicle. to get more on this accident, i'm joined now by officer amelia jack with the chp. can you tell me what happened. >> approximately 6:49 this morning we received a call that there was a traffic collision involving a patrol vehicle and another vehicle that was overturned. upon our arrival, we found our patrol vehicle here had been struck. so the details that i've received so far is that our patrol vehicle had pulled up adjacent to a pickup truck on the shoulder who was broken down, changing a tire. they were both within the right hand shoulder and for an unknown reason as the patrol officer moved closer to the shoulder, he was struck from the rear by this lexus suv.

the lexus suv continued northbound in the slow lane and then overturned on the shoulder and came to rest over off on the off ramp. as it overturned, two of the six parties in that suv were ejected. one o of -- of them sustained a major injury and one sustained fatal injuries. and the others in the vehicle sustained minor injuries. >> it was a family, traveling, a woman 44 years old. the officer has minor injuries. do we know how fast this car was traveling or if people were wearing seat belts. >> we're not sure of the speed or the cause as to why they swerved to the shoulder. the parties that were still within the vehicle after it overturned all had on seat belts. it's still being investigated whether the parties that were ejected had seat belts on. that's unknown. there were no children in the
